Temporary Ice Pets
product, 2013

A product to teach and educate people about life, death and grief by means of a block of ice. The Temporary Ice Pet comes with googly eyes and a birth certificate so users become attached to it. But it is made of ice, so there is an inevitability to it - it's gonna die, kids. The Ice pet comes with a booklet featurings things to do with your Ice Pet, the background behind Ice Pets, and what to do when your pet dies. On the reverse of the birth certificate is a death certificate, for when it is required.

Motel Study
architectural model, 2013

After reading 'Architecture as Signs and Systems for a Mannerist Time' by Robert Venturi and Denise Scott-Brown, I was inspired to create an architectural model that was influenced by their theories. The motel seemed to be the ideal form: structurally it's a loft, with a lot of room for signage and architecture as communication (as Venturi promotes in the book), but it is also deeply rooted in American culture, the American vernacular and a Las Vegas-style main street. I intended to make the model as communicative as possible, with large letters on the roof (referencing Venturi's BASCO warehouse) and a sign facing the oncoming cars. Made from balsa wood.

A Brief Analysis of Postmodernism
A4 booklet, 2013

An A4 booklet with extracts from my essay 'Does Postmodernism still exist in today's culture'. This extract examines some key postmodern pieces such as Graves' Portland Building and Venturi's Vanna Venturi House. Hand-drawn illustrations are included.

'X' prints
screenprints, 2013

An experiment with using two-colour screenprinting to create a pattern that would represent the letter X. I decided to split the X up into its two strokes, then arrange the strokes in a grid. One stroke is unrecognisable, but when they are both combined together they form the recognisable letter.

Henne Beach House
architectural model, 2013

A redesign of a 2011 concept of mine, which I originally created in LEGO. This second model, made from balsa wood and acetate, realises the design's original plan, which was to give this low beach house two open cubes instead of one. The house is intended for a specific beach in Henne, Denmark, and its form opens towards the sea. It is, ultimately, a viewing gallery for the beach and sea beyond, with the two cubes housing a dining room and a bedroom that make the most of the view.

Debris Slide album covers
photography, 2012

Debris Slide are a Nottingham-based shoegaze (self-labelled 'shitgaze') band. They asked me to make some concept album covers for them. To reflect their lo-fi, ambient sound, I used a VCR and an old black and white TV, fast-forwarding and taking photos of the TV to create a blurred effect. Those images were then edited and recoloured for the final set of concept album covers.

WHAT HYPE Magazine, Issue 1
A5 magazine, 2012

WHAT HYPE Magazine is a photography magazine I founded and started in early 2012. In December it released its first issue, self-published, with an initial run of 60 copies. Featuring great photography from some of the best young photographers around the world. I invited these photographers to submit work related to the issue's theme, 'Night', and designed the magazine myself. The branding and 'no-bullshit' attitude also extends to additional products, advertising and the magazine's website.

The Olavian Magazine
A4 magazine, 2012

The Olavian is my school's annual publication, documenting everything that has happened in the past school year. I was approached to redesign the Olavian for its 2012 issue, which focused on the school's 450th anniversary. Previously, the design had been cold and bland, so in my redesign I wanted to change this. I looked at old issues of the Olavian from the 1960s, and both its design (the banner on the cover and illustration of Saint Olaf) and photographs were incorporated into the 2012 issue. Every part of the Olavian has different content, and so needs a different design: the 450th anniversary supplement, the Old Olavian section, the school notes and the subject news.
